Montessori Principle

ABC 123 Learning Center of California, Inc. will provide educational opportunities for children ages 2 through grade school, from low income families to promote literacy in both English and Spanish speaking students through utilizing the Montessori method.

The Montessori Method is both a methodology and educational philosophy. It was originally developed in the early 1900's by Dr. Maria Montessori as a way to educate the lower-income children of the San Lorenzo district of Rome in her native Italy. Dr. Maria Montessori once stated, "I have studied the child. I have taken what the child has given me and expressed it and that is what is called the Montessori Method." As an educational approach, the Montessori Method is to focus is on the individuality of each child in respect of their needs or talents, as opposed to the needs of the class as a whole. A major goal is to help the child maintain their natural joy of learning.

Here are some of the important principles of the Montessori Method:

  1. The ultimate importance of Observation Of The Child interacting with his or her environment as the basis for ongoing curriculum development. Presentations of subsequent exercises for skill development and information accumulation are based on the teacher's observation that the child has mastered the current exercise(s).

  2. Understanding of the Sensitive Periods Of Development, during which a child's mind is particularly open to learning specific skills or knowledge, including language development, sensorial experimentation and refinement, and various levels of social interaction.

  3. A belief in ''The Absorbent Mind", that children from birth to around age 6 possess limitless motivation to achieve competence within their environment and to perfect skills and understandings. This phenomenon is characterized by the young child's capacity for repetition of activities within the sensitive period.

  4. The concept that children can be Masters Of Their Environment, which has been specifically prepared for them to be academic, comfortable, and allow a maximum amount of independence.

  5. The knowledge that children Learn Through Discovery, so Montessori manipulative materials that are self-correcting are used as much as possible.

  6. Independent Problem Solving is the Montessori base that entails an individualized program where children can progress through the materials at their own pace. This gives children an opportunity to excel beyond traditional academic levels and also works one on one for those that need extra help. This method utilizes all learning styles such as Auditory, Visual and Manipulative..

ABC 123 Learning Center of California Inc. can provide children with high end Montessori education. Our organization can help bring the children up to grade level and beyond grade level without separating the children from their appropriate age group. Our curriculum is a combination of fun activities and hands-on academic materials in a structured environment. The premises of a Montessori approach to teaching and learning includes views of children as competent beings capable of self-directed.
